Mauro Franchino

Legendary Mauro Franchino and his nephew Alberto Raviciotti farm a scant 3 hectares (7.5 Acres) practicing sustainable viticulture. They select only their best Nebbiolo to make their wines in their tiny winery in the center of Gattinara. On a typical year, they use less than 30% of their crop, while the remaining 70% is sold to other producers. The volcanic soils of Gattinara, rich in porphyry rocks, provide these Nebbiolos with a vibrant, mineral character. Super traditional fermentations and aging in old, large neutral botti yield pure, ethereal and elegant Gattinaras, which are considered amongst the finest and the most authentic in the appellation.
